The existing Prasa stations were underdeveloped and rundown. ARCA Unlimited was commissioned to design upgrades and assist in the modernisation of the Prasa stations to accommodate new electronic speed gate machines and facilities; matching facilities first seen in the Gautrain development. The aim was to keep pace with the Gautrain and its stations, whilst keeping to severe budget constraints. To date over 50 stations have been modernised within Gauteng along both the major North-South and East-West train lines, with further rollouts planned across South Africa. Modernisation at most of the Prasa stations is done through an exploration of prototype follies to which different functions can be assigned as needed. The creation of these interchangeable and highly adaptable follies complies with the imposed budget constraints.
